Solarcentury To Bring Solar To Colombia
The Solarcentury International Projects team recently visited Colombia to explore the opportunity for off-grid projects and grid-tied systems. The trip was in conjunction with Hybrytec, a local solar company. Jose Miguel and Carlos Fornes from Solarcentury spent the week in Bogota and Medellin in Colombia visiting potential customers with Hybrytec and explaining the benefits of off-grid solar PV systems.
Despite being the third largest economy in Latin America, more than 60% of Colombia is off-grid. This is a similar story in other countries in the region where the often vast land areas do not easily allow for the electricity grid to reach every corner. In areas with no grid-supplied electricity, people must rely on diesel generators. But diesel is expensive. A cheaper and cleaner alternative is off-grid solar systems.
Solar is a growth market in Latin America, with rapidly expanding economies that have ever increasing energy demands. Country leaders are starting to realise there is money to be saved by making use of the plentiful daylight hours enjoyed in this part of the world.
During their visit, Jose, Carlos and Hybrytec met with mining and energy companies, and other high energy users reliant on costly diesel gen off-grid energy systems. They are looking to install solar to help reduce energy spend and cut their carbon emissions.Hybrytec executives visited Solarcentury UK office in London, to share ideas on engineering processes, project management and working culture.
