Plans Unveiled For A 49MW Solar Farm For Anglesey

The Solar Building Company (SBC) in partnership with Mere Environmental is seeking to obtain planning permission for a 49MWp solar farm on Anglesey. This will be split between 4 separate areas of land located around Llanfihangel yn Nhowyn. The investment into the project will be in the region of £55M and is planned to be operated under the new CfD (Contracts for Difference) support mechanism. It will have to compete in the auction with other projects.

This development will generate electricity for over 12,000 homes per year saving some 22,800 tonnes of CO2 annually "“ more than 500,000 tonnes over the lifetime of the plant. The existing agricultural use of the land with sheep grazing will continue.

"This development is a big boost to renewable energy production on Anglesey," says James Steynor, SBC's Managing Director. "The development, being split over four areas, will have very limited visual impact and will be completely silent. Solar is perhaps the most accepted renewable and is certainly unobtrusive unlike, for example, wind farms."

"We are working with SBC on a number of initiatives on Anglesey of which this is our first major development," commented Mark Hogg, Managing Director of Mere Group.

Before planning is submitted the local community will be consulted; SBC plans to hold this public consultation in the next four weeks. The consultation will be advertised, with timing and location, in the local press and through leaflets distributed to all properties in the local area of the development. The full proposed plans of the development and studies, including the landscape and visual impact assessment, will be provided along with views of the site from all surrounding areas. Local residents will be encouraged to provide their feedback on the plans and to engage with SBC's engineers as well as its planning consultants.

Following the public consultation the plans will be submitted for approval by the local authority. SBC expects the development to be constructed during 2016.
