Barrett Steel Trials Solar Panels At Four UK Sites
As part of its Environmental Improvement Strategy, Barrett Steel has started a £300,000 project to install solar panels at four of its sites. The project, which will reduce the amount of CO² emissions by 150 tonnes, will be trialled initially at AHA Steelstock, Burton; Goodman Steel, Reading; Barrett Engineering Steel North West, Oldham; and Barrett Steel Services, Bradford. Within the next 12-18 months the project will be extended to Barrett Steel Group sites across the UK.
Mel Bray, Director of Integrated Management Systems, explains: "The project is an integral part of company strategy to reduce our carbon footprint. Not only will the system reduce CO² emissions it will also produce electricity for on-site use, with the excess exported to the grid."
Barrett Steel Group is also working towards Group wide accreditation for the environmental standard, ISO 14001:2004, following the award in October 2012 to Barrett Steel Services Bradford, the Group's head office site. As part of the process the Group has already implemented initiatives to reduce electricity, water and fuel consumption, optimise raw material use and become more energy efficient in production processes.
