E.ON And East End Foods Install Solar Array
Work has now been completed on a £250,000 project to install what is thought to be Birmingham's (UK) largest solar array "“ to the roof of the East End Foods cash-and-carry at Aston Cross. E.ON installed the 612 panel solar photovoltaic array at the 120,000 sq ft former HP Sauce factory site which will generate up to 150kW of electricity "“ enough to run 37 average sized homes, according to the company.
The panels are designed to meet all of the building's daytime electricity demand and will save an estimated 63 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year. Any surplus electricity generated will be fed back into the national grid.
Michael Woodhead, MD of E.ON's sustainable energy business, said: "East End Foods is a real business success story for Birmingham and the West Midlands and this project is a great example of two companies "“ both hugely experienced in their fields "“ working together to put sustainable energy at the heart of future plans.
"In the UK the sun's rays still have as much as 60% of the strength of those at the Equator, so even on cloudy or overcast days these solar panels will be providing a sustainable energy source that will increase energy security, reduce bills and contribute towards Birmingham's environmental ambitions."
