Bluesky Maps Solar Potential For London Fire

Aerial mapping company Bluesky has completed a project to assess the potential for solar energy generation at over one hundred London Fire Brigade premises.  The brigade commissioned the solar suitability reports in order to address spiralling energy costs and reduce carbon emissions.  Using the latest aerial photography and 3D computer models Bluesky has assessed the suitability of all properties for solar panel installation and provided estimations of potential energy savings.  Properties with the greatest potential were studied in further detail with the production of 3D models and detailed shading analysis.

The London Fire Brigade (LFB) employs approximately 7,000 staff, of which 5,800 are operational firefighters and officers. Part of a group of organisations under the 'umbrella' of the Greater London Authority (GLA) LFB are the third largest firefighting organisation in the world, protecting people and property from fire within the 1587 square kilometres of Greater London. With a diverse range of properties located across the capital solar energy seemed to offer a potential solution to rising energy costs.

The Brigade has properties, of all shapes and sizes, across London; from single appliance stations to multi appliance units with additional specialist equipment right through to its headquarters building. The information provided by Bluesky means that London Fire Brigade can now accurately assess its individual properties to fully understand this potential and effectively target its resources and hopefully maximise its return on investment
Working on behalf of LBF Bluesky provided an initial assessment for each of the brigade's 111 properties.

The Bluesky PDF reports highlighted potential energy savings and provided an assessment as to the number of panels each property could accommodate. Following this initial assessment Bluesky undertook a detailed analysis of selected properties including the production of animated 3D models and a study of local features that may shade a solar installation and reduce production of solar energy.

Bluesky has a unique method of generating solar potential maps using photogrammetric techniques to accurately measure and record factors that may contribute to the suitability for solar power. Bluesky calculates the energy potential using high resolution aerial photography combined with 3D data to determine the size, aspect and gradient of individual properties. The suitability of each roof element is then considered taking into account roof shape and other impediments such as sky lights or dormer windows, as well as potential obstructions such as neighbouring properties or trees.  Bluesky can also provide measurements for other environmental energy projects such as wind turbines, micro hydro and heat pumps.
