Warwickshire Town In A Bid To Become The Greenest Place In England
EOS continues to drive solar conversion of own area
Eos Energy, the company which has pledged to turn its "home town", Southam in Warwickshire, into Britain's first solar-powered city, has signed up a further 100 local residents for their free PV (photovoltaic) installation scheme at a community open day.
"We aim to make Southam the greenest town in the country. We have secured £20-million funding that allows us to offer solar PV installations free of charge," explained Dean Walton, Director of EOS.
Mr Walton said the company recently held an open day to explain the scheme to local residents and businessmen "“ along with showcasing various other green initiatives that Eos and its parent company, Alumet, are involved in.
"The response was fantastic," said Mr Walton "“ we had 25 local businesses showing off their products and services, as well as our own, and our staff held events all day that raised more than £2,000 for the Myton Hospice."
Best of all though, the event brought 100 new customers who signed up for free solar power "“ they will join the Deputy Mayor of Southam, Dave Wise, who had his rooftop PV array installed in February, saving him hundreds of pounds on electricity bills, and numerous other residents and businesses which have taken advantage of the free solar scheme.
"As a community we in Southam are all very environmentally conscious "“ we want the best for our children and coming generations, and that means reducing our carbon footprint and making our town and surroundings as pleasant to live in as possible," said Mr Walton.
There are roughly 21,000 homes and commercial buildings in Southam, and its dormitory villages, which could potentially generate a huge amount of solar power for local use and to feed into the national grid.
"We can convert Southam, and then we foresee that other UK towns and cities will follow. We firmly believe that the dream of a solar-powered UK can become a reality," said Mr Walton.
