Council Encourages Solar Uptake
Reading Council has been pro-active in encouraging solar uptake in the region
The Reading Council showed there desire to develop a soalr market in the region by releasing the following report to their residents.
Reading homeowners strapped for cash could be making money if they have south-facing roofs. Since April 2010 homeowners who install solar panels which generate electricity can earn money on all the electricity they generate, whether they use it themselves or export it to the grid. Using solar power means you use less power made from fossil fuels like gas, coal and oil and everyone who does that is joining in the fight to tackle climate change.
Solar panels are a great investment if people can afford it or can borrow at a low rate from their mortgage lender, as they not only benefit from some free electricity but can also earn up to £900 a year from the electricity generated. For homeowners who can't or don't want to make the investment, some companies are offering to install solar panels for free allowing the homeowners to benefit from some free or reduced cost electricity, but the money they generate is kept by the company.
Reading Borough Council is keen to help residents to find out more about their options for having solar power and saving money while reducing their impact on the environment and climate change, and is hosting a number of solar companies in Broad Street (near Marks and Spencer) on Thursday 28th Oct and Friday 29th Oct from 11 - 4 each day.
Warren Swaine, Lead Councillor for Environment and Sustainability, said: "Even if you don't believe that an individual can make a real difference to climate change, you can make a real difference to your wallet. Come and see what's on offer and the options available. You may be surprised at what's in it for you."
