MEMS Project Delayed
TSMC and UMC been informed by Toshiba of MEMS project delay.
According to reports in Taiwanese media Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC) have been informed that Toshiba will delay a plan to produce MEMS microphones as a result of global economic downturn.
Industry sources said that Toshiba pursued the foundries how much of their capacity can be dedicated to the production of the MEMS devices on a regular basis. Toshiba appeared to have a strong interest to start volume production in 2009.
However, a new schedule has not been issued by Toshiba after it informed the foundries of the delay. TSMC and UMC were ready for volume production, but the news of the delay has returned their MEMS deployment to the engineering stage according to sources.
Despite the global economic downturn, the foundries had been actively deploying in the MEMS sector in a hope to start serving customers with the prospect of a positive growth in 2009.
