MEMS Slows On Consumer Fears
Financial crisis affecting MEMS device sales in consumer systems, but barely, says The Information Network.
Consumer applications, which make up nearly 50% of the MEMS market, will be affected by the credit crisis, but new and emerging applications will take up the slack, according to the report: The Global MEMS Device, Equipment, and Materials Markets: Forecasts and Strategies for Vendors and Foundries, recently published by The Information Network, a New Tripoli, PA based market research company.
While the current consumer confidence index is by no means a record low, fear, uncertainty, and doubt make it feel that it is to shoppers, which will have an adverse affect on the holiday buying season getting under way shortly.
Already a standard in consumer products such as inkjet printers and digital cameras, MEMS devices that include 3D sensors and accelerometers are finding a place in mobile phones, game controllers, toys, GPS, laptops, and hard disk drives.
The MEMs device market will grow 25% in 2008 to just over 2.5 billion units and 11 percent to nearly $7.8 billion.
The consumer sector will reach more than $3.5 billion of the nearly $7.8 billion market in 2008. In 2012, the sector will reach more than $7.1 billion, 46% of the total MEMS market of $15.4 billion.
