Tronics Microsystems Expands Offer To Medical Device Industry

News
The offer was expanded by acquiring MedTech Development. Silicon Valley based MedTech Development enables MEMS provider to broaden its competencies and better access US medical companies.
Tronics Microsystems, a provider of custom MEMS components and microsystems for demanding applications, announced that it has acquired all the assets of MedTech Development, a full service design and development company exclusively focused on medical devices. MedTech is based in Sunnyvale and has an office in Minneapolis. Terms and price of the acquisition were not disclosed.

This acquisition is a first step in Tronics' plans to increase its presence in the U.S. and in the medical device sector. It will provide Tronics an improved access to North American makers of implantable and external medical devices and will allow closer customer support through MedTech Development's locations. MedTech employs a team of 15 senior electrical, mechanical, software, device communication engineers and project managers, with extensive experience in medical device applications.

The combined know how, technologies and experience of Tronics and MedTech Development will allow the two companies to offer development of more sophisticated specialised medical devices. They will serve a market in which medical applications require an increasing amount of integration of highly miniaturised transducers and electronics, a trend that is expected to keep growing.

“This acquisition accelerates our expansion in the U.S. and MedTech Development will enable us to introduce our technologies into medical customer products during the design-in phase, at a more strategic level,” said Peter Pfluger, CEO of Tronics Microsystems.

“The medical device market is continuously developing more intelligent products through the integration of miniaturised sensors and actuators, many of which are MEMS based. This acquisition is a logical combination of technologies, business models and expertise that will create significant value for our customers and growth opportunities for the now combined companies,” said Enrique Malaret, CEO of MedTech Development.

For the past two years, the companies have partnered in order to supply a large medical corporation with the design and development of an implantable sub system that includes a custom MEMS component. Previous examples of MedTech Development's design projects include external and implantable neural stimulation devices that treat chronic diseases and acute pain management, and telemedicine solutions for management of chronic diseases, among others.

MedTech Development will operate as a division within Tronics and keep its focus on the medical device market. Tronics Crolles will remain focused in producing highly differentiated custom MEMS and microsystems for a diverse customer base in the medical, life sciences, instrumentation, transportation and other industries around the world.
