E-recycling In India
Newport Computer Services and IL&FS Waste Management and Urban Services Limited (IWMUSL) announce joint venture to provide e-recycling services in India.
Newport Computer Services has signed a joint venture with IL&FS Waste Management and Urban Services Limited (IWMUSL), a subsidiary of IL&FS India to provide an eco friendly, compliant, and sustainable business model for the growing e-waste market in India. The joint venture combines the strong environmental management services and market positioning of IWMUSL in India, with Newport's intellectual capital and experience of managing e-recycling services in the US.
IWMUSL is an Environmental Infrastructure company with Pan India operations in Waste Management. IWMUSL and IL &FS have a strong client base in India that will help accelerate the acceptance of the joint venture services.
In business since 1994, Newport Computer Services brings to the joint venture extensive experience in managing a full service IT asset management, recovery, processing and disposal service. Newport believes that emerging markets, such as India, offer an opportunity to pro actively participate in building a global value chain for IT Asset Recovery.
As in the United States, there is an absence of a systematic and scalable process of collection, processing and disposal of electronic waste in India. Frost & Sullivan in their report on the Indian semiconductor market estimates, that the hardware market in India is expected to grow at 30% per annum till 2015 to a size of $320B. The combined effect of these factors, and India's population density is causing significant pressures in major cities for proper disposal of displaced electronic equipment. There is recognition that this growth will be hampered, unless an effective, environmentally friendly process is established. Currently, it is highly fragmented and there are no scalable business models that can cope with this growing challenge.
The challenge of creating a systematic and scalable process of collection, processing and disposal of e-waste in India offers an opportunity to partner with the Industry and other stakeholders in India to develop a relevant e-waste solution and, in the process, as an early entrant, build a valuable business.
