Taiwanese Chipmakers Turn To MEMS
Favourable market positions are being fought for by the big Taiwanese
chipmakers in the MEMS area since the increase of availability.
MEMS have become in strong demand since the consumer industry provides an increased number of applications. For a long time MEMS used to be associated with the automotive industry, but the mobile phone industry and the market for games consoles has increased the use of MEMS. Think of the Wii and the iPhone.
TSMC has started to use its 150 mm and 200 mm fabs for MEMS production which are used in ink jet printer heads. Also, TSMC plans to go for foundry orders for digital mirror devices and radio frequency MEMS next year.
Advanced Semiconductor Engineering has gained substantial orders to test automotive sensors, radio frequency MEMS modules, silicon microphones and bio chips. The company co-operates with Universal Scientific Industrial, VLSI, Nordic, Medtronic and austriamicrosystems.
Asia Pacific MEMS Systems plans to contract UMC to manufacture its products which are designed on sub 0.35 micro metres.
It has been noted by industry experts that MEMS accounts for approximately 50 percent of testing and packaging costs. Furthermore, Texas Instruments and Sanyo have entered the MEMS market too.
