Japanese companies Toshiba and NEC are promoting a jointly developed
standard for higher capacity blue-laser-based DVD technology to the DVD
Forum.
The NEC/Toshiba format covers both read-only and read-write configurations.
The read-only disks will have a 15GByte and 30GB capacities in single-sided
single- and dual-layer configurations. Read-write (RW) capacities could
reach 20GB. Current DVD technology has capacities up to 8.5GB (dual-layer,
single sided). The Japanese companies are also working to boost RW capacity
to 40GB in a single-sided, dual-layer format.
