Fujitsu Microelectronics Has Exercised Its Option To Accelerate The Sale Of
Fujitsu Microelectronics has exercised its option to accelerate the sale of
its Gresham wafer fab to Microchip Technology to August 2002. One of the
remaining closing conditions is the qualification of the facility under
Oregon's Strategic Investment Program. Microchip has made a definitive
agreement to buy the Gresham semiconductor manufacturing facility from
Fujitsu Microelectronics for $183.5mn (Bulletin 442, July 22, 2002).
Plasma etch toolmaker Tegal has signed a definitive agreement to buy
Sputtered Films, a manufacturer of high-performance sputtering equipment for
thin film deposition for 1.5mn Tegal shares and a performance-based future
cash earnout. The deal is expected to be completed during August 2002.
Sputtered Films's tools are used in the semiconductor, photomask, advanced
packaging (including flip chip) and compound semiconductor industries. The
company has 18 employees, who will continue to be based in Santa Barbara,
California. On completion of the acquisition, Tegal estimates its worldwide
employee count will remain at 140, its level before the acquisition.
