The World Semiconductor Trade Statistics Organisation Reports World IC Sales
The World Semiconductor Trade Statistics organisation reports world IC sales
at $11.351bn in June 2002 (three-month moving average). The European share
was $2.145bn, down 14.3% on last year. Asia Pacific managed year-on-year
growth of 29.5% to $4.169bn. The Americas market shrank 10.9% to $2.585bn
and Japan was 25.9% down at $2.452bn.
Graphics ICs outship CPUs, according to Jon Peddie Research (JPR). The
researchers say that 30% of the computers that ship have two graphics
devices for every x86-based processor.
Senior analyst Lisa Epstein reports: "Today there are just eight suppliers
and only two with significant market share. The rest survive on the over-buy
of the industry, spot availability, aggressive pricing, and niche
positioning."
Mobile PC display controllers accounted for 19% of total graphics shipments
in Q1 2002, up from 14% in Q1 2001. JPR estimates that 40.79mn graphics
devices shipped for all segments of the PC industry in Q1 2002, representing
a 2.3% increase from 39.89mn units in the same period the previous year. In
Q1'02, 33.06mn or 81% were desktop controllers and 7.73mn or 19% were mobile
display controllers. Eight suppliers accounted for 99% of all graphics
shipments during the quarter.
The company sees a mixed outlook for Q2 2002, as the industry enters a
traditional seasonal slowdown. JPR points out that many suppliers - such as
AMD, Apple, Intel, HP and IBM - have all issued revised guidance in the face
of unexpected shortfalls going forward.
The mobile PC market managed positive unit growth year-on-year in Q2,
despite a slight decline in the overall number of PC shipments, according to
preliminary results from Gartner's Dataquest unit.
The number of worldwide mobile PC shipments totalled 6.9mn units in Q2 2002,
a 6.1% increase from Q2 2001 when shipments totalled 6.5mn units. By
comparison, worldwide PC shipments declined 1% compared with last year.
The mobile PC market grew in most regions except for Japan and Latin America
with the US mobile sales growing 9.3% year over year. The notebook market is
expected to outperform the desktop sector this year and next.
