Process Alliance For 65/45nm
AMD, Infineon Technologies, and UMC plan to collaborate on the development
of common high-volume 65/45nm logic manufacturing platforms for 300mm
wafers. Initial work for the joint development program will take place at a
UMC facility in Hsinchu, Taiwan. With this initiative, Infineon expands upon
an existing agreement they have with UMC to develop 130/90nm process
technology and will join the process development programme AMD and UMC
announced earlier this year targeted for the 65nm and 45nm nodes.

"NanoPockets" boost blue LEDs
Kopin is claiming higher efficiency for its CyberLite blue LEDs, based on
joint research with scientists from North Carolina State Univeristy (Applied
Physics Letters, July 29, pp841-843). The researchers found that
InxGa1-xN/GaN multiquantum well LEDs with periodic thickness variations
"exhibit substantially higher optical efficiency" than devices with uniform
thickness. It is believed that the variations allow confinement of the
carriers, enhancing the efficiency. The long range thickness variation is of
the order of 50-100nm, which is believed to be "key" to the confinement.
There are also 3-4nm short range variations.
Kopin has trademarked the development as "NanoPockets". The CyberLite LEDs
need less than 2.9Vx20mA power to produce 100mcandela brightness. Commercial
blue LEDs usually operate at 3.3V, providing similar illumination. Kopin
uses an organmetallic chemical vapour deposition (CVD) process.
