Bookham Closes Two Sites
The recession in the telecoms sector was underlined last week with Bookham
Technology announcing it is to close two out of its four manufacturing
sites. Facilities in the UK (Swindon) and USA (Maryland) are to close.
Bookham believes its Milton Park site in Abingdon, UK, is adequate to
annually produce $306m worth of passive optical components on silicon using
the company's ASOC process. The other continuing facility - in Caswell, UK -
was bought from Marconi Optical Components. This produces active optical
devices and is considered to have similar capability in terms of potential
revenues to Milton Park. About 70 jobs will be lost of Bookham's 750
