European lithography company ASML announced a 22% reduction in a workforce of 6650 people. The companys lithography operation will lose 700 workers - 350 of these being based in the Netherlands.
ASMLs lithography track business - employing 300 people - is to be closed. Thermal operations are to be sold, taking a further 450 people of ASMLs wage bill. The company is seeking to employ only 5200 staff by July 2003.
At the time of the merger with Silicon Valley Group in 2001, ASML saw business opportunities in integrating exposure with the track systems used to develop photoresists.
Now, ASMLs president/CEO Doug Dunn says: "We have concluded that integrating our track systems with our lithography platform would take too long and would require too much investment. We still believe in the integration of track and lithography. Moving forward, we will look for possible partners to accomplish this goal."
