The US Patent and Trademark Office issued its top ten private sector
patent recipient table for 2002. Preliminary counts give IBM top billing
(as in 2001) with 3288 patents. Japans Canon came second with 1893. US
DRAM producer Micron Technology came third with 1833. The list is
completed by US and Japanese companies. In order, these are NEC (1821),
Hitachi (1602), Matsushita Electric Industrial (1544), Sony (1434),
General Electric (1416), Hewlett-Packard (1385) and Mitsubishi (1373).
HPs portfolio includes patents from the Compaq merger - 159 from Compaq
Computer and 165 from Compaq Information Technologies Group.
