EMCORE has acquired Agere Systems West Coast USA optoelectronics business
for $25mn. The transaction includes assets, products, technology and
intellectual property related to Ageres cable TV optical components,
telecom access and satellite communications operations.

The business was bought as Ortel by Lucent Technologies in April 2000. The
business has a workforce of 230 employees - 215 Agere employees will now
join EMCORE. The business will be operated as Ortel, a division of EMCORE.
Agere successfully sold the remainder of its optoelectronics business to
TriQuint Semiconductor earlier this month (Bulletin 465, January 9, 2003).
