An IC design and software development centre has been set up in Rabat, Morocco, by STMicroelectronics. The decision to set up the centre expands on ST's existing Moroccan presence from package, assembly and test.
The centre is to develop system-on-chip (SoC) products for digital TV, DVD players, flat-screen displays, and digital still and video cameras. Rabat is also developing and supporting application software, which can be integrated into a complete platform for the needs of European customers in the mobile multimedia and set-top box markets. Later, embedded systems and application boards will be developed.
ST plans to employ close to 150 designers at the site by the end of 2004. Around 20 graduates from the Morocco's Mohammadia School of Engineers and another 20 from other schools in Morocco and around the world have already been recruited for the first phase of development.
