RES And SNCF Energie Sign A CPPA For Nearly 40 Megawatts Of Renewable Energy In France

News

RES and SNCF Energie, a subsidiary of SNCF Voyageurs, announced today that they have signed a long-term Green Corporate PPA. This is yet another large-scale contract signed between a renewable energy producer and a large independent consumer in France. With a capacity of nearly 40 megawatts over 15 to 20 years, this Green Corporate PPA is one of the largest in Europe in terms of volume and demonstrates SNCF's commitment to the energy transition.

After signing France's largest Green Corporate PPA with Voltalia in June 2019 for a capacity of 143 MWp, SNCF Energie, a wholly-owned subsidiary of SNCF Voyageurs, is continuing to develop long-term purchases of renewable energy and has signed a contract with RES, a French and international renewable energy company. This new renewable power purchase agreement, for a period of 15 to 20 years, represents a capacity of nearly 40 MWp and should produce around 2% of the electricity consumption required for all SNCF Voyageurs trains.

SNCF Voyageurs is consolidating its ambition to achieve 40 to 50% renewable energy in its electricity mix by 2025. To achieve this, SNCF Energie is engaged in negotiations with various developers and producers of renewable energy. The objective is to contract in the next 1 to 2 years 3 to 5 times the volumes already acquired through the first two Green Corporate PPAs.

New climate-friendly solar power plants

This contract will enable the construction and operation of solar power plants from 2021, which will be linked directly to SNCF Energie for its direct needs. The long-term purchase allows the construction of new renewable generation infrastructure and has a real, direct and sustainable effect on the energy transition. These solar farms, with a total output of 40 MWp, will be located in the Alpes de Haute-Provence, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in the South of France. They will be commissioned between 2021 and 2023. The annual production will amount to nearly 60 GWh, which corresponds to the consumption of about 24,000 French households (the population of towns such as Rodez, Les Ulis and Bègles).

Two major players fully committed to responsible energy

The SNCF Group is pursuing its ambitious and proactive policy of responsible energy consumption, while already being the passenger and goods transport operator with the lowest greenhouse gas emissions in the mobility sector (11% of passengers and goods transported in France for less than 1% of the sector's greenhouse gas emissions).

RES, a historic player committed to the energy transition for the last 38 years, including more than 20 years in the French market, is one of the leaders in the renewable energy sector. To date, RES has built more than 18 GW of wind and solar projects and has now contracted more than 1.6 GW of power purchase agreements worldwide.

"RES is proud to make a long-term commitment to the energy transition alongside SNCF Energie, by enabling the construction of new solar capacity outside the calls for tender issued by the Energy Regulatory Commission. This agreement demonstrates the attractiveness and competitiveness of solar energy in France. The signature of this corporate green PPA is a further step in the pursuit of our vision of a future where everyone has access to affordable, zero carbon energy. The contract with SNCF Energie is a first for RES in France and, we hope, the beginning of a long series to come." said Sébastien Dubois, Managing Director of RES in France.

"With this new contract, we consolidate our ambition to develop green corporate PPA contracts for 20% of our electricity consumption, to reach more than 40% of electricity from renewable sources in our electricity supply mix within 3 to 4 years. This is in line with the desire of the whole SNCF group and railway workers to offer more sustainable mobility thanks to ever cleaner trains. We are proud to contribute through this contract to the creation of additional solar photovoltaic capacity in France, which will benefit the transition of the French energy mix" underlines Christophe Fanichet, Chairman and CEO of SNCF Voyageurs.

"As part of the "PPA Renewable Energy" permanent competitive dialogue programme led by Bénédicte Maury, Chief Executive Officer of SNCF Energie, and with this new contract signed with the renewable electricity producer RES, we are taking another major step forward on our path towards Responsible Energy, which can be summed up in four major ambitions: energy efficiency, green development, decarbonisation and the creation of societal value." said Olivier Menuet, Chairman of SNCF Energie, Carbon Energy Manager of SNCF Voyageurs.
