Network Rail Plans For One Of The Biggest Solar Panel Installations In The UK.

News
6,000m² of Solar panels to be installed on the roof of new train station-
Solar panels will soon be installed on the roof of the new Blackfriars train station- in what Network Rail says will be one of the biggest solar panel installations in the UK.

There will be 6,000m² of solar panels split between the north and south stations. These will generate an estimated 1.058MW of solar energy, which will then be used to make free electricity. This is predicted to reduce the stations carbon emissions by a staggering 50%. The solar panels have been installed using 7.3 million pounds from the Department for Transport's fund which has been set aside especially for the use of preserving passenger safety, as well as the environment.

In addition to the solar panels, the station will also have sun pipes installed, rain harvesting systems and thermal insulation fitted. The aim is that by making use of the free solar energy, free solar power and other renewable sources of energy that are available it will reduce the stations dependence on the National Grid and the water network.

The rail network have said ‘This project will provide a high profile, visual example of integrating renewable energy production into modern design in a prime central London location, which will help further raise awareness of climate change and carbon management.'
